United Yorkie Rescue - A 5. Non- Profit Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Organization Nemo is a little Yorkie boy who is approximately 6 years old. Nemo is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL. THANK YOU TO NEMO'S RESCUE ANGELS! ![]() Irene and Peter Havas in memory of Buddy, Vanessa and Pepe, Nestor Sanchez, Edward Guise, Nestor Sanchez, Sandra Wendt, Wendy Fuhrmaneck, Regina Brantley, Holly Stavis. Updated Bio 7/6/1. Meet Nemo! Nemo was initially brought in as a stray, and sprung from a local high kill shelter in very poor condition. Not only was he underweight, had kennel cough, a urinary tract infection, and an upper reparatory infection, he also had a neglected overabundance of yeast. This yeast condition made him itchy, caused a loss of much of his fur, and caused his skin to become thick and black. Fast- forward almost 1. He is on a very inexpensive anti- yeast pill to help his fur regrowth. He also takes an anti itching medication called Apoquel. After several tests the vet determined he has something called Diabetes Insipidus (DI), which is also known as water diabetes, This is something different that the more common sugar diabetes. Basically, he has a faulty pituitary gland, which does not tell him when he's had enough water to drink, so he constantly drinks water, which results in frequent urination. He is on a daily medication for this, called Desmopressin. The medication helps regulate his pituitary gland, so he is not constantly thirsty, however he still needs to be let out every 3 or 4 hours and he may still have a few accidents. This medication is very helpful and absolutely necessary for Nemo to have. The cost is about $1. That may seem expensive, but Nemo is so worth it. He loves his morning walks, and then he can snooze the rest of the day. He also loves his squeaky toys. Maxwell is a 10 year old, 5 pound Yorkie boy residing in Canyon Country, CA. Unlike many Yorkies, Nemo does not bark very much at all, although when he gets excited he breaks into a little howl, which is super cute. They should be easy going and not high energy. He would probably prefer no cats, or older, very secure cats that won't run from him. When he meets another dog on his walks, he turns into a little Napoleon. His foster parents have used a technique called . Nemo, like many little pups like to chase cats, birds, ducks, and lizards. But he is easily distracted away from doing that by either walking on or showing him a little treat. His absolute favorite animal however, is the squirrel, and he proves that he is a terrier anytime he sees one. Because of this Nemo must not be walked on a flexi leash, but rather a regular 6- foot leash, and can never be walked off leash. Both his adopters were very upset when they returned him. The first time having 2 dogs proved to be too much for his adopter, the second time Nemo seemed to become very sad and no longer was interested in walking, playing, or interacting, but when he was returned to his foster home, he perked right back up. Nemo needs a home with a fenced in yard and no doggie door. Nemo needs someone who understands that he might initially get sad when they get him, and if he does to give him the time he needs to overcome his sadness and realize that he is in a safe place. It does take Nemo time to adjust. When he first came to his foster home he laid on the couch, curled up for over 3 weeks. He was sick, but we think this little boy has really been through a lot and going to another home might affect him more than other dogs, however once he knows he is safe he will adjust and become his happy, funny, playful self. His forever home didn't work out. Nero's new bio coming soon. Nemo was previously adopted, but unfortunately having 2 dogs overwhelmed his new mamma so she returned him. He has Diabetes Insipidus, which causes him to drink too much water resulting in frequent urination. He is on medication for this, but he still needs to go out frequently. He also produces an overabundance of yeast, causing itching and hair loss. He is on an oral medication for this as well as baths once a week or so. He does have leash reactivity/aggression when he meets other dogs, and he is receiving training for this but hasn't yet mastered it completely. Nemo knows several commands such as sit and stay, and he has learned . Nemo is also made to sit when his leash is attached. The cost of this food is comparable to any other premium dog food. Nemo also has a condition called Diabetes Insipidus, more commonly referred to as . The extra expense of Nemo! I get along with good- natured dogs and cats and my perfect home would have at least one stay- at- home parent so I can be taken out regularly. I have a ton of love to give to my new family - could it be you? He is feeling better, but he still is drinking a lot of water, so we are going to have some further tests run on him. He went to the vet yesterday, and he is now on some oral medication to help with all the extra yeast rampaging his little body. He has been getting baths about 3 times a week, and we are beginning to see some improvement in the condition of his skin with some hair regrowth, though it will take time for his condition to fully improve. Nemo got a new shampoo and he is now on prescription food. We are hoping this will help him continue to heal. Nemo is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL. He has a terrible yeast infection all over his body, which has caused his skin to thicken and the loss of hair on his body. To add insult to injury he picked up kennel cough at the shelter and has been curled up on the couch for almost 2 weeks. However, with the help of Doxycycline antibiotics he is feeling much better. He actually played with a toy for the first time yesterday, and today was the first time he got off the couch to greet his foster mom when she came home. Originally the shelter thought he was maybe 7 years old, but a private vet thought he was younger since his teeth are in pretty good shape. It's hard to tell his age still, as he has been feeling so poorly he has not been acting very playful. Clearing it up is a very time consuming process and we still haven't seen much improvement, but it can take 2 to 3 months before he starts looking like the handsome Yorkshire Terrier he really is. Nemo is house trained, but right now he has a urinary tract infection. He is drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently, so that is causing him to have accidents in the house. We hope his accidents in the house are caused by the UTI and that when he is done with the antibiotics his potty habits will be back to normal. If they aren't, he will go back to the vet for more tests. So far he ignores the cats, but he also isn't feeling well. The optimal home for Nemo would be with adults, maybe a laid back dog of similar size, and older children are also okay. Nemo will not be ready for adoption until at least December, if not later. His teeth are in pretty good shape, and the vet ventured a guess that based on that, he is younger, so we are not exactly sure of his age at this time. He was turned in as a stray at a local high- kill shelter, and not only did his owner not come for him, but because of his appearance, he had no interest from the public, so the shelter turned to United Yorkie Rescue for help. Nemo has an advanced yeast infection of his skin, and is not only missing a lot of hair, but his skin is irritated and thickened in many places. We are hoping that with a medicated bath 3 times a week, as well as some anti- itching medication, a good diet and extra Omega 3's, his appearance will start to improve in the next several weeks; however, it might take several months for him to come into his full potential as the adorable dog he is. Since he is so new to his foster home some of this may be him just getting adjusted to another new situation. Update: The vet did a urinanalysis which showed that he does have a UTI. He is now on antibiotics for that. Frequently when dogs that were strays come from the shelter, it can take them several days to properly settle in. No surprise either that his white blood cells were elevated, and at this point the vet thinks it is due to his overall poor condition and yeast & UTI infection. He is still not feeling his best, but he has shown no interest in the cats and gets along with the other dogs. He has, however, shown some signs of resource guarding over a bone, which is typical, so his foster parents are no longer giving him dog bones to chew on. They think he will be fine with other animals, but this could change once he is feeling better. Nemo will be taught that it is not okay to run out any door and his foster parents are making sure he is contained when a door to the outside is opened. Right now Nemo would need a home with adults only or with children over the age of 1. Nemo is not near any opened door.

Home Remedies for Constipation: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Diet. Most people suffer from constipation at some point of time but some may complain of more frequent bouts than others. For most people constipation is a discomfort that's best not discussed as it is in most cases temporary and for most people it's an awkward subject. If the problem is severe or frequent and causes you a great deal of discomfort however it is important that you discuss it with your health care provider. In most cases dietary and lifestyle modifications alone suffice and there is no real need for medical treatment. Our perceptions of constipation can also vary as this depends on what one views as regular bowel movements. While some individuals need to pass a stool at least twice or thrice a day, for some others regular bowel movements may simply include passing a stool once in two or three days. In most cases however an individual is said to suffer from constipation if there is straining to pass stools most of the time, if stools are hard most of the time, if the bowels are not completely evacuated a lot of the time and if bowel movements occur just once or twice a week. For chronic cases, where the problem of constipation frequently recurs or is long lasting, a more aggressive form of treatment may be necessary. Infants, children and adults can all suffer from constipation due to a variety of reasons. Symptoms of Constipation. Other symptoms of constipation may include: Irregular or less frequent bowel movements or anything less than thrice a week (severe constipation refers to only one or less bowel movements per week)Sudden change in regularity. Harder stools that are more difficult to pass. A bloated feeling in the lower abdomen. Straining while passing stools. Coated tongue. Bad breath. Depression and anxiety. Headaches. Insomnia. Loss of appetite. Dark circles under the eyes. Stage 3 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the final development of liver disease caused by conditions other than alcohol use. Gas and bloating. Varicose veins. Heartburn. Children who suffer from constipation may be easily fatigued and have no appetite. ![]() ![]() ![]() Infants tend to be uneasy and fussy and suffer from gas and bloating. Causes of Constipation. Constipation occurs because of the slow passage of digesting food through the intestines. While this could occur in any part of the intestine in almost all cases this occurs in the colon. In almost all cases the main cause of constipation is a poor diet or dehydration, but it may also be caused due to certain medications. In some cases, constipation may also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. You may need to undergo a series of blood tests, stool tests and abdominal x- rays to rule out various factors that may be causing the constipation. In severe cases, a barium enema or a colonoscopy may be required as well. However, these drugs should not be used for long periods of time or to treat chronic cases of constipation. To tackle severe constipation you need a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes to really make an impact on your bowel movements. If you prefer herbal or natural remedies for constipation, make sure you check with your doctor before trying anything new. Also keep in mind, an overuse of herbal supplements can reduce their efficacy in the long run. ![]() For milder cases of constipation bulk forming laxatives that contain fiber are recommended. These soften the stool and make it easier to pass. Fiber supplements such as Metamucil can help, but make sure you drink enough water when taking such supplements or it could worsen the situation. The other types of laxatives are stimulant laxatives. These cause the muscles of the intestine to contract and encourage a bowel movement. However, these types of laxatives are not suitable for long- term use and can result in an electrolyte imbalance in the body and dehydration. If the constipation has been caused by an illness or as a side effect of surgery, stool softeners are usually prescribed to help make the bowel movement less painful. Saline or mineral oil enemas are more aggressive cures for constipation and should not be used on a regular basis. Home remedies for constipation in toddlers and children generally involve the use of suppositories. Glycerin suppositories are inserted into the rectum and soften stools and make them easier to pass. Popular constipation remedies for adults include: Herbs such as flaxseed, fenugreek or barley work as bulk forming laxatives and are excellent chronic constipation cures. They contain soluble fiber that helps soften stools and reduces discomfort during bowel movements. Studies have supported some of these claims and defatted flaxseed meal was found to help in the treatment of constipation. ![]() ![]() Learn more from WebMD about tests used to diagnose pancreas problems from the experts at WebMD. It causes the walls of the intestines to contract and encourages a bowel movement. Senna should not be used for long periods of time and as with any herbal treatment should be taken under the supervision of a trained specialist. Aloe vera juice is a popular home treatment for constipation. Dilute aloe vera juice in water and drink first thing in the morning and last thing at night for regular bowel movements. Some people may experience cramping or diarrhea with aloe vera juice so proceed with caution. Pears and pear juice if consumed at breakfast and dinner time can help relieve constipation symptoms. If the constipation is severe, a fruit only diet for a few days will go a long ways towards clearing up the condition. Guava eaten raw with the seeds provides enough roughage to relieve constipation and soften stools naturally. For the best results eat one or two whole guavas every day. Grapes contain organic acid and cellulose that makes them a natural laxative. Grape juice can help tone the internal muscles of the stomach and prevent chronic constipation. If fresh grapes are unavailable, raisins soaked overnight in water are the next best alternative. Oranges stimulate the bowels and encourage regular bowel movements. Oranges also help prevent the accumulation of waste matter in the colon and reduces the chances of constipation. Dried or fresh figs, prunes and prune juice and fresh papaya are other fruits that are used to treat constipation. Raw spinach helps cleanse the digestive tract and cures constipation. Drink raw spinach juice mixed with water twice a day for the most effective treatment. You could also drink a glass of hot water with half a teaspoon of salt and the juice of half a lime added to it. Do this as soon as you wake up before consuming any other food or beverages. This is believed to help regularize bowel movements. Diet for Constipation. An ideal diet to cure constipation and prevent its recurrence is one that is high in fresh fruits and vegetable, especially those with high fiber content. Dried fruits, whole grains, cereals, and vegetables are the best ways to get fiber into your diet. For the best results, you must increase your intake of water as well. Keep hydrated at all times to prevent the hardening of stools and encourage regularity. For some people, suddenly adding high amounts of fiber into their diet may cause gas and bloating. If this is the case, try introducing small amounts of fiber at a time until the digestive system gets used to it. Suggestions for Constipation. The best way to treat constipation is to try and prevent it. To avoid constipation you must: Include lots of fiber into your diet. Drink plenty of water daily but avoid too much caffeine and alcohol. Start a regular exercise routine. Do not delay a bowel movements if the urge occurs. Chew food slowly and well when eating. Do not eat on the go or at irregular times. Avoid foods that are high in fats and refined sugar. Avoid over processed and junk food. If you are pregnant and suffer from constipation stay away from laxatives and over- the- counter medications as these can cause premature contractions. Opt for natural remedies and dietary changes to prevent constipation instead. Certain yoga poses and asanas stimulate the digestive tract and encourage bowel movements. Deep breathing exercises and meditation also help relieve stress and anxiety that may be causing the constipation. References. Xu J, Zhou X, Chen C, Deng Q, Huang Q, Yang J, Yang N, Huang F. When your gallbladder is functioning properly, eating nutritious foods such as peanut butter poses little danger. Your gallbladder plays a crucial role in digesting fat from your diet. If this small organ begins giving you trouble, your doctor will typically prescribe a fat- restricted diet to prevent related symptoms. Unfortunately, if you're a peanut butter lover, this means you must avoid peanut butter until your gallbladder issues are resolved. The good news is, there is an alternative. Your gallbladder sits just below your liver and acts as a storage center for a digestive substance made by the liver called bile. Every time you eat a meal that contains fat, your gallbladder contracts to squeeze bile into your intestines, where it breaks fat down into smaller particles your body can absorb. Once digestion is complete, your gallbladder relaxes and returns to storing bile, which is made of cholesterol, salt and other substances. Under normal circumstances, you don't feel your gallbladder contracting or notice anything out of the ordinary after a meal. Gallbladder issues such bile duct problems can cause unpleasant side effects, however. Symptoms include diarrhea, gas or cramping after eating a fat- containing meal. You may also experience a sudden sharp pain on the right side of your abdominal cavity - - due to the gallbladder contracting - - if you have gallstones, or small crystallized pebbles of bile. Not everyone with gallbladder problems has symptoms, however. Your physician may schedule you for gallbladder removal surgery, or determine another course of treatment, if you have gallbladder dysfunction. In the meantime, you may have to limit your fat intake to about 5. A serving of peanut butter, which is 2 tablespoons, contains about 1. This way you can still enjoy the creamy, nutty taste of peanut butter without all the fat. Powdered peanut butter is made from peanuts that are pressed to remove about 8. For many cancers, there were distinct clusters of counties with especially high mortality. The location of these clusters varied by type of cancer and were spread in different regions of the United States. Clusters of breast cancer were present in the southern belt and along the Mississippi River, while liver cancer was high along the Texas- Mexico border, and clusters of kidney cancer were observed in North and South Dakota and counties in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Alaska, and Illinois. Conclusions and Relevance. Cancer mortality declined overall in the United States between 1. Over this same period, there were important changes in trends, patterns, and differences in cancer mortality among US counties. These patterns may inform further research into improving prevention and treatment. Moreover, local information can also be useful for health care clinicians to understand community needs for care and aid in identifying cancer hot spots that need more investigation to understand the root causes. This research received institutional review board approval from the University of Washington. Informed consent was not required because the study used deidentified data and was retrospective. County- level information on levels of education, income, race/ethnicity, Native American reservations, and population density derived from data provided by the Census Bureau and the NCHS were also used. More detail on these data sources is provided in e. Table 1 in the Supplement. Although the focus of this study is cancers, all causes of death in the GBD cause list were analyzed concurrently. Previous studies. This study used garbage redistribution methods developed for the GBD to reallocate deaths assigned garbage codes. First, plausible target causes were identified for each garbage code or group of garbage codes. Second, deaths were reassigned to the specified target codes according to proportions derived in 1 of 4 ways: (1) published literature or expert opinion; (2) regression models; (3) according to the proportions initially observed among targets; and (4) for HIV/AIDS specifically, by comparison with years before HIV/AIDS became widespread. The model for each cause was specified as. Dj,t,a. The model for mj,t,a contained 6 components: an intercept (. The model incorporated 7 covariates: the proportion of the adult population that graduated high school, the proportion of the population that is Hispanic, the proportion of the population that is black, the proportion of the population that is a race other than black or white, the proportion of a county that is contained within a state or federal Native American reservation, the median household income, and the population density. After raking, age- standardized mortality rates were calculated using the US 2. Census population as the standard, and years of life lost were calculated by multiplying the mortality rate by population by life expectancy at the average age at death in the reference life table used in the GBD1 and then summing across all ages. When measuring changes over time, the change was considered statistically significant if the posterior probability of an increase (or decrease) was at least 9. No explicit correction for multiple testing (ie, across multiple counties) was applied; however, modeling all counties simultaneously is expected to mitigate the risk of spuriously detecting changes due to multiple testing. The study reports mortality rates for lip and oral cavity; nasopharynx; other pharynx; esophageal; stomach; colon and rectum; liver; gallbladder and biliary; pancreatic; larynx; tracheal, bronchus, and lung; malignant skin melanoma; nonmelanoma skin cancer; breast; cervical; uterine; ovarian; prostate; testicular; kidney; bladder; brain and nervous system; thyroid; mesothelioma; Hodgkin lymphoma; non- Hodgkin lymphoma; multiple myeloma; leukemia; and all other cancers combined. Two types of risk assessments are possible within the comparative risk assessment framework: attributable burden and avoidable burden. Attributable burden is the reduction in current disease burden that would have been possible if past population exposure had shifted to an alternative or counterfactual distribution of risk exposure. Avoidable burden is the potential reduction in future disease burden that could be achieved by changing the current distribution of exposure to a counterfactual distribution of exposure. Four types of counterfactual exposure distributions have been identified. In GBD studies and in this study, the focus was on attributable burden using the theoretical minimum risk level, which is the level of risk exposure that minimizes risk at the population level or the level of risk that captures the maximum attributable burden. The study reported the number of years of life lost in addition to deaths to account for the fact that many deaths from certain cancers occur at an older age. For example, prostate cancer was the fifth leading cause of death among cancers but the ninth leading cause of cancer years of life lost. Lung, colon, and breast cancer were the top 3 leading causes for all metrics. Lung, colon, and breast cancers also had the largest absolute difference in mortality between counties at the 9. Lung cancer mortality rates were twice as high among counties in the 9. Table 2 shows the 5- year relative survival for selected cancers from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program. Table 3 in the Supplement) and the population- attributable fraction from the GBD using the comparative risk assessment approach. Although cancer survival improved from 1. Hodgkin lymphoma) had a 5- year survival rate of more than 8. The population- attributable fraction of risk factors was the highest for lung and cervical cancer and the lowest for ovarian cancer. Results for all cancers combined and for 1. Figures, with results for the remaining cancers presented in e. Figures 1- 2. 3 in the Supplement. The 1. 0 specific cancers highlighted below were chosen because they have either high burden (eg, tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer), because they are responsive to treatment (eg, testicular cancer), or because screening is an important component of the health system response (eg, breast cancer). For cancers that predominantly or exclusively affect males or females (eg, breast cancer, prostate cancer), results are reported for males or females only, while in all other cases results are presented for both sexes combined. Mortality rates by county for each cancer are available in an online visualization tool (Interactive). Cancer mortality (Figure 1) decreased from 1. In 1. 98. 0, the lowest mortality rate was 1. Each year, the event wends its way across the country like a travelling medicine show, billing itself as the largest display of gluten- free products in the United States. Banners hung from the rafters, with welcoming messages like “Plantain Flour Is the New Kale.” Plantain flour contains no gluten, and neither did anything else at the exposition (including kale). There were gluten- free chips, gluten- free dips, gluten- free soups, and gluten- free stews; there were gluten- free breads, croutons, pretzels, and beer. There was gluten- free artisanal fusilli and penne from Italy, and gluten- free artisanal fusilli and penne from the United States. Dozens of companies had set up tables, offering samples of gluten- free cheese sticks, fish sticks, bread sticks, and soy sticks. One man passed out packets of bread crumbs, made by “master bakers,” that were certified as gluten- free, G. M. O.- free, and kosher. There was even gluten- free dog food. Gluten, one of the most heavily consumed proteins on earth, is created when two molecules, glutenin and gliadin, come into contact and form a bond. When bakers knead dough, that bond creates an elastic membrane, which is what gives bread its chewy texture and permits pizza chefs to toss and twirl the dough into the air. Gluten also traps carbon dioxide, which, as it ferments, adds volume to the loaf. Humans have been eating wheat, and the gluten in it, for at least ten thousand years. For people with celiac disease—about one per cent of the population—the briefest exposure to gluten can trigger an immune reaction powerful enough to severely damage the brushlike surfaces of the small intestine. People with celiac have to be alert around food at all times, learning to spot hidden hazards in common products, such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein and malt vinegar. Eating in restaurants requires particular vigilance. Even reusing water in which wheat pasta has been cooked can be dangerous. Until about a decade ago, the other ninety- nine per cent of Americans rarely seemed to give gluten much thought. But, led by people like William Davis, a cardiologist whose book “Wheat Belly” created an empire founded on the conviction that gluten is a poison, the protein has become a culinary villain. Davis believes that even “healthy” whole grains are destructive, and he has blamed gluten for everything from arthritis and asthma to multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. David Perlmutter, a neurologist and the author of another of the gluten- free movement’s foundational texts, “Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar—Your Brain’s Silent Killers,” goes further still. Gluten sensitivity, he writes, “represents one of the greatest and most under- recognized health threats to humanity.’’Nearly twenty million people contend that they regularly experience distress after eating products that contain gluten, and a third of American adults say that they are trying to eliminate it from their diets. One study that tracks American restaurant trends found that customers ordered more than two hundred million dishes last year that were gluten- or wheat- free. I know that I’m intolerant because I gave it up and I felt better. That explanation is probably not scientific enough for you. But I know how I felt, how I feel, and what I did to make it change.” She went on, “I’m a foodie. It’s been five years since I had biscotti. And I just had one here, gluten- free. And it rocks.”Sales of gluten- free products will exceed fifteen billion dollars by 2. The growing list of gluten- free options has been a gift for many children, who no longer have to go through life knowing that they will never eat pizza, cookies, or cake. As with organic food, which was at first sold almost exclusively by outlets with a local clientele, the market is controlled increasingly by corporations. Goya and Shop. Rite both had booths at the expo; so did Glutino, which was founded in 1. And that is what drove us, the idea of being that one- stop shop in gluten- free, the category leader, the category captain.”For many people, avoiding gluten has become a cultural as well as a dietary choice, and the exposition offered an entry ramp to a new kind of life. There was a travel agent who specialized in gluten- free vacations, and a woman who helps plan gluten- free wedding receptions. One vender passed out placards: “I am nut free,” “I am shellfish free,” “I am egg free,” “I am wheat free.” I also saw an advertisement for gluten- free communion wafers. The fear of gluten has become so pronounced that, a few weeks ago, the television show “South Park” devoted an episode to the issue. South Park became the first entirely gluten- free town in the nation. Federal agents placed anyone suspected of having been “contaminated” in quarantine at a Papa John’s surrounded by razor wire. Citizens were forced to strip their cupboards of offending foods, and an angry mob took a flamethrower to the wheat fields.“No matter what kind of sickness has taken hold of you, let’s blame gluten,’’ April Peveteaux writes in her highly entertaining book “Gluten Is My Bitch.” (Peveteaux maintains a blog with the same name.) “If you want or need to get gluten out of your diet, bravo! Kick that nasty gluten to the curb. Not sure if gluten- free is for you? Perhaps gluten simply causes you some discomfort, but you’ve never been diagnosed. Then eff that gluten!’’Wheat provides about twenty per cent of the world’s calories and more nourishment than any other source of food. Last year’s harvest, of seven hundred and eighteen million tons, amounted to roughly two hundred pounds for every person on earth. In the United States, wheat consumption appears to fluctuate according to nutritional trends. It rose steadily from the nineteen- seventies to about 2. Since then, the number of people who say that wheat, barley, and rye make them sick has soared, though wheat consumption has fallen. Wheat is easy to grow, to store, and to ship. The chemical properties of flour and dough also make wheat versatile. Most people know that it is integral to bread, pasta, noodles, and cereal. But wheat has become a hidden ingredient in thousands of other products, including soups, sauces, gravies, dressings, spreads, and snack foods, and even processed meats and frozen vegetables. Nearly a third of the foods found in American supermarkets contain some component of wheat—usually gluten or starch, or both. The most obvious question is also the most difficult to answer: How could gluten, present in a staple food that has sustained humanity for thousands of years, have suddenly become so threatening? There are many theories but no clear, scientifically satisfying answers. Some researchers argue that wheat genes have become toxic. Davis has said that bread today is nothing like the bread found on tables just fifty years ago: “What’s changed is that wheat’s adverse effects on human health have been amplified many- fold. You and I cannot, to any degree, obtain the forms of wheat that were grown fifty years ago, let alone one hundred, one thousand, or ten thousand years ago. We have to restrict other carbohydrates beyond wheat, but wheat still stands apart as the worst of the worst.’’ Perlmutter is less restrained: “As many as forty percent of us can’t properly process gluten, and the remaining sixty percent could be in harm’s way.”Although dietary patterns have changed dramatically in the past century, our genes have not. The human body has not evolved to consume a modern Western diet, with meals full of sugary substances and refined, high- calorie carbohydrates. Moreover, most of the wheat we eat today has been milled into white flour, which has plenty of gluten but few vitamins or nutrients, and can cause the sharp increases in blood sugar that often lead to diabetes and other chronic diseases. Donald Kasarda, a researcher at the U. S. Department of Agriculture, has studied wheat genetics for decades. In a recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, he found no evidence that a change in wheat- breeding practices might have led to an increase in the incidence of celiac disease. Murray, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and the president of the North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease, has also studied wheat genetics. He agrees with Kasarda. And there is something more important to note. Wheat consumption is going down, not up. I don’t think this is a problem that can be linked to the genetics of wheat.”But something strange is clearly going on. For reasons that remain largely unexplained, the incidence of celiac disease has increased more than fourfold in the past sixty years. Researchers initially attributed the growing number of cases to greater public awareness and better diagnoses. But neither can fully account for the leap since 1. Murray and his colleagues at the Mayo Clinic discovered the increase almost by accident. Murray wanted to examine the long- term effects of undiagnosed celiac disease. To do that, he analyzed blood samples that had been taken from nine thousand Air Force recruits between 1. The researchers looked for antibodies to an enzyme called transglutaminase; they are a reliable marker for celiac disease. Murray assumed that one per cent of the soldiers would test positive, matching the current celiac rate. Instead, the team found the antibodies in the blood of just two- tenths of one per cent of the soldiers. Then they compared the results with samples taken recently from demographically similar groups of twenty- and seventy- year- old men. In both groups, the biochemical markers were present in about one per cent of the samples.“That suggested that whatever has happened with celiac disease has happened since 1. Murray said. The modern diet may be to blame. ![]() Colon Cleanse Kit- ! Eat as much fruit as you like per meal (ex. Eating 6 bananas for a meal)During the Colon Cleanse, it's ideal to feed the body adequate amounts of fresh organic or locally grown fruit. It is best to eat only fruit during the cleanse. Not only does fruit supply the body with the right kind of energy to draw out unwanted substances, it also ensures the small intestine and colon remain well hydrated so it's an ideal environment to support the cleansing and toxin elimination process. Fresh fruit supports the elimination process by providing water, oxygen, live fiber, pectin, and many vital nutrients. Below is a list of great intestinal cleansing fruits: Apples. Avocados. Bananas. Blackberries. Blueberries. Grapefruit. Oranges. Papaya. Pineapples. Raspberries. Strawberries. Tomatoes. Watermelon. White Grapes. Also, fruit is easy to carry with you wherever you go (even in your purse or briefcase), making it easy for you to perform the Colon Cleanse during work hours or other daily activities. Fruits provide you with the energy you will need during your colon cleansing regimen. Fruits also break down easily and prevent the body from expending too much energy. You should eat fruit whenever you are hungry during the cleanse. This might sound difficult, but when you think about it, it really only takes about 2 minutes to peel and enjoy a banana or eat an apple or a bunch of grapes. It is best to keep a little variety in the fruits you eat throughout the day and the week. If the fruits recommended are not in season or you have a difficult time finding them, you can use apples or bananas (which are typically available year round) as a replacement or as a last resort frozen fruit. Option #2: Eating a Healthy Diet. If you choose this option, try to purchase organic or locally grown. Conventionally grown foods bought from regular grocery stores are usually not as . Binge Eating Disorder: Treatments, Signs, and Causes. Binge eating disorder is a serious condition characterized by uncontrollable eating and resulting weight gain. People with binge eating disorder frequently eat large amounts of food (beyond the point of feeling full) while feeling a loss of control over their eating. Often, these habits are a way of coping with depression, stress, or anxiety. Although the bingeing behavior is similar to what occurs in bulimia nervosa, people with binge eating disorder do not engage in purging by vomiting or using laxatives. Many people who have binge eating disorder use food as a way to cope with uncomfortable feelings and emotions. These are people who may have never learned how to deal effectively with stress, and find it comforting and soothing to eat food. Unfortunately, they often end up feeling sad and guilty about not being able to control their eating, which increases the stress and fuels the cycle. What Are the Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder? Most people overeat from time to time, and many people say they frequently eat more than they should. Eating large amounts of food, however, does not mean that a person has binge eating disorder. People with binge eating disorder have several of the following symptoms weekly for at least 3 months: Frequent episodes of eating what others would consider an abnormally large amount of food. Frequent feelings of being unable to control what or how much is being eaten. Eating much more rapidly than usual. Eating until uncomfortably full. Eating large amounts of food, even when not physically hungry. Eating alone out of embarrassment at the quantity of food being eaten. Feelings of disgust, depression, or guilt after overeating. People who have binge eating disorder also tend to have: Fluctuations in weight. Feelings of low self- esteem. Loss of sexual desire. Frequent dieting. What Causes Binge Eating Disorder? The exact cause of binge eating disorder is still unknown, and researchers are just beginning to understand the consequences of the disorder and the factors affecting its development. Like other eating disorders, binge eating disorder seems to result from a combination of psychological, biological, and environmental factors. Continued. Binge eating disorder has been linked to other mental health disorders. Nearly half of all people with binge eating disorder have a history of depression, although the exact nature of the link is unclear. Many people report that anger, sadness, boredom, anxiety, or other negative emotions can trigger an episode of binge eating. Impulsive behavior and certain other psychological problems also seem to be more common in people with binge eating disorder. Eating disorders, including binge eating disorder, tend to run in families, suggesting that a susceptibility to eating disorders might be inherited. Researchers also are looking into how brain chemicals and metabolism (the way the body burns calories) affect the development of binge eating disorder. People with binge eating disorder often come from families that overeat or put an unnatural emphasis on food; for example, using it as a reward or as a way to soothe or comfort. How Common Is Binge Eating Disorder? Although only recently formally recognized as a distinct condition, binge eating disorder is probably the most common eating disorder. Most people with binge eating disorder are obese (more than 2. Binge eating disorder probably affects 1- 5% of all adults. Among mildly obese people in self- help or commercial weight loss programs, 1. The disorder is even more common in those with severe obesity. Binge eating disorder is slightly more common in women than in men. The disorder affects African- Americans as often as Caucasians; its frequency in other ethnic groups is not yet known. Obese people with binge eating disorder often became overweight at a younger age than those without the disorder. They also might have more frequent episodes of losing and regaining weight. How Is Binge Eating Disorder Treated? Treatment of binge eating disorder is challenging because most people feel ashamed of their disorder and try to hide their problem. Often they are so successful that even close family members and friends don't know they binge eat. Eating disorders require a comprehensive treatment plan that is adjusted to meet the needs of each patient. The goal of treatment for binge eating disorder is to help the person gain control over his or her eating behavior. Treatment most often involves a combination of the following strategies: Psychotherapy: This is a type of individual counseling that focuses on changing the thinking (cognitive therapy) and behavior (behavioral therapy) of a person with an eating disorder. Treatment includes practical techniques for developing healthy attitudes toward food and weight, as well as approaches for changing the way the person responds to stress and difficult situations. Medication: The stimulant drug Vyvanse is currently the only FDA- approved medication for the treatment of binge eating disorder. Other types of medicines have begun to receive research attention to possibly help reduce bingeing behavior, such as the anticonvulsants Topamax (topiramate) or Zonegran (zonisamide). Certain antidepressantmedications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) might be used to help control anxiety and depression associated with an eating disorder. Nutrition counseling: This strategy is designed to help restore normal eating patterns, and to teach the importance of nutrition and a balanced diet. Group and/or family therapy: Family support is very important to treatment success. It is important that family members understand the eating disorder and recognize its signs and symptoms. People with eating disorders might benefit from group therapy, where they can find support, and openly discuss their feelings and concerns with others who share common experiences and problems. Continued. What Are the Complications of Binge Eating Disorder? The poor eating habits that are common in people with binge eating disorder can lead to serious health problems. The major complications of binge eating disorder are the conditions that often result from being obese. These include: In addition, people with binge eating disorder are extremely distressed by their binge eating. In some cases, people will neglect their jobs, school, or social activities to binge eat. What Is the Outlook for People With Binge Eating Disorder? Like other eating disorders, binge eating disorder is a serious problem that can be solved with proper treatment. With treatment and commitment, many people with this disorder can overcome the habit of overeating and learn healthy eating patterns. Can Binge Eating Disorder Be Prevented? Although it might not be possible to prevent all cases of binge eating disorder, it is helpful to begin treatment in people as soon as they begin to have symptoms. In addition, teaching and encouraging healthy eating habits and realistic attitudes about food and body image also might be helpful in preventing the development or worsening of eating disorders. Insects are arthropods (a type of invertebrate, animals that lack a backbone). Cabbage Moth Cabbage Butterfly - Yates. The Problem. Plutella xylostella, Pieris rapae. There are many types of caterpillars which are usually the larval (caterpillar of a grub) stage of moths such as cabbage moth (Plutella xylostella)and small cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae). Cabbage white butterfly is white with distinct black spots on the wings and is around 4. The cabbage moth is greyish and small and is around 1. The moths and butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. The larvae of caterpillars hatch from the eggs and then feed on the leaves or fruit, so it’s the caterpillar of the cabbage white butterfly or cabbage moth which does the damage. The blue- green smooth textured caterpillar is that of the cabbage white butterfly, while the caterpillar which is green- brown is that of the cabbage moth. Devoted animal lovers sometimes say their pets are like children—and like children, a furry best friend can cause plenty of strife in a relationship. Whether it’s a disagreement about how to train a dog or a dispute over how much attention pets should get, conflict regarding pets can cause major turmoil. One study found that the average dog causes 2,0. A disagreement about pets doesn’t have to spell the end of your relationship, but it may require that each of you make some accommodations. Practice Good Communication. If you’re starting a new relationship, take time to discuss your values regarding pets. If having an indoor cat or a dog that sleeps in your bed is important to you, you’ll need to ensure your partner shares these values or risk ending up in conflict. If you’re already in an established relationship, it’s time to begin communicating clearly and openly. Don’t get a new pet without consulting with your partner and getting his or her enthusiastic consent. If you want to change the way you do something with your pets—for example, allowing Fido to sleep in the bed or taking more frequent walks with your pet and your partner—talk to your partner before taking the plunge rather than making a decision and expecting him or her to abide by it. Get Specific with the Problem. When there’s conflict over pets, getting specific about the problem can help you figure out a solution. If your husband complains about your dog constantly or your wife snaps at your cat, you might assume that the pet is the problem or that your partner hates your pet. ![]() But a change as simple as teaching your dog not to beg or keeping your cat off the bookshelf could remedy the issue. If you’re the pet lover, ask your partner specifically what the issue is and what would fix it. And if you’re the one resenting your partner’s pet, be clear about what you need to feel better. Consult an Expert. A poorly trained dog or aggressive cat is frustrating to everyone, but the person who brought the pet into the relationship is sometimes more sympathetic to—and defensive about—the pet. If your partner is annoyed by a specific behavior such as excessive scratching, it’s time to call an expert. A trainer can work with you to make your pet a more mannerly member of the family, and a veterinarian can help you uncover hidden health problems that contribute to annoying behavior. It will cost some money, but it may be worth it to save your relationship and keep your pet happy and healthy. Accept Differences. You and your partner don’t have to agree about everything. You may find that one of you is simply less in love with your pets than the other. As long as your partner isn’t abusive toward animals, he or she doesn’t have to let Fido lick him/her on the face or put up with Kitty’s constant scratching. ![]() ![]() If you’re the one who brought the pet into the relationship, be prepared to do a little extra work. There’s no reason your partner has to love your pets as much as you do, or even spend as much time caring for them. As long as you can strike a fair balance that ensures your pet’s needs are met, consider giving your partner a pass on nightly pet duties. ![]() References: Johnston, S.
